Should I buy this? Buy or wait guide (India)
Before a big purchase in India, weigh emergency fund, EMIs, goals, and your Freedom Target timeline — and see how GoalPehle buy checks help you decide.
Why “can I afford it?” is not enough
Affording the EMI is different from affording the opportunity cost. A ₹80,000 phone might be payable on a card, but it could also delay your emergency fund or push financial freedom back by months.
Questions to ask before you buy
Run through this checklist before you tap “Pay now” on a discretionary purchase:
Is my emergency fund still intact (typically 3–6 months of expenses)?
Will this add or stretch an EMI?
Does it move a stated goal forward or sideways?
How many months of savings does this equal?
GoalPehle buy checks
For nice-to-have purchases, GoalPehle builds an adjusted-income composite score on your combined calendar-year spend: confirmed buys already recorded plus the item you are checking. Wishlist holds do not count until you confirm the purchase. Total adjusted annual income = money left after EMIs plus a 4% passive portfolio yield on net worth excluding your primary home. The score uses 60% weight on combined ÷ that adjusted income and 40% on combined ÷ full net worth (assets minus debt, home included). Approved at ≤ 3%, Wait / budget between 3% and 8%, and Not recommended above 8%. Assessment shows the calculation and how to improve affordability. Necessary purchases still focus on your emergency fund and high-priority goals.
Frequently asked questions
What is a buy or wait calculator?
It scores a purchase against your income, net worth, emergency fund, and goals so you can see whether buying now delays financial freedom.
Should EMI affordability be the only test?
No. EMI capacity ignores opportunity cost. Also check emergency fund health, goal delay, and how many months of savings the purchase equals.
